Robert Moreno, the interim head coach of the South Korean national football team, on Monday denied reports that he used ChatGPT to prepare games.
Moreno spoke at a press conference in Cheonan where he announced his first squad. He addressed earlier claims that emerged during his spell at Russian club Sochi.
The Spaniard left Sochi in September 2025 after a difficult run of results. Reports later claimed he relied on the artificial intelligence tool for line-ups, training plans and even player signings.
Moreno rejected the accusations firmly. “I have never used ChatGPT or any AI to prepare matches, decide line-ups or choose players. That is completely false,” he said.
He explained that he only used the tool occasionally for language translation between Russian and Spanish. Meanwhile, he stressed that all sporting decisions came from him and his coaching staff.
“Anyone who spends 10 minutes looking into it can see that everything has been taken out of context and put together to cause harm,” Moreno added.
He noted that technology forms part of modern coaching. GPS systems, video analysis and scouting platforms help process information faster. However, final choices always remain with the human staff.
The Korea Football Association appointed Moreno on September 1 after Hong Myung-bo resigned following South Korea’s group-stage exit at the 2026 World Cup. Moreno will lead the side in upcoming friendlies.
He selected captain Son Heung-min in his 30-man squad for matches against Ecuador, Uruguay, Venezuela and Uzbekistan. Moreno said his main goal was to deliver honest work and make Korean fans happy again.
