Abia State Governor Alex Otti stated that his administration worked to revitalise the Akwete weaving industry. He made the remark on Tuesday during a visit by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society in Ukwa East Local Government Area.
Otti explained the efforts. “Our administration has been working to revitalise the Akwete weaving industry since assuming office by dismantling the barriers that have limited its growth,” he said.
He added that the government designed a comprehensive development plan. He proposed a partnership with the First Lady to build a world-class production hub for the women weavers.
The governor warned about competition. He noted that the indigenous textile industry could lose market share to machine-made imitations from countries such as India and China. He stressed the need to embrace innovation and technology.
Otti also commended President Bola Tinubu. He praised the economic reforms, including the removal of petrol subsidy and the floating of the naira.
“The reforms have increased resources available to the federal, state and local governments for infrastructure development,” he said. He appealed to Nigerians to remain patient as benefits emerge.
Abia State First Lady Priscilla Otti described the visit as a historic milestone. She commended the Renewed Hope Initiative for interventions in women empowerment and small businesses. She said the First Lady’s promotion of Akwete fabric would create lasting economic opportunities for women in the craft.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu announced a ₦2 billion donation. She pledged to promote the fabric and said, “If God brings my husband in a second time, I will be wearing a buba and wrapper made from Akwete.” She highlighted its soft, breathable cotton quality and generational transfer of the craft.
Leaders including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Uche Ogah and Chris Nkwonta sent goodwill messages. They emphasised women’s empowerment for national development and commended the leadership of President Tinubu and Governor Otti.
