BREAKING: Dangote Refinery Calls Back Sacked Engineers, Issues Fresh Warning

Dangote Petroleum Refinery recalled engineers it had earlier redeployed across its business units. Management warned the workers against any repeat of misconduct.

The development came days after reports of the recall surfaced. It marked a reversal from previous actions taken during a dispute with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery had sacked or redeployed several engineers in October 2025. Officials cited reorganisation and alleged acts of sabotage as reasons for the move. The company linked some terminations to disruptions that affected operations.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, known as PENGASSAN, protested the decision. Union leaders claimed the engineers faced punishment mainly for joining the association. PENGASSAN responded by shutting down oil and gas facilities for several days.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery approved the recall of the affected engineers. Many of them had already accepted redeployment to other units within the Dangote Group, such as sugar and cement plants.

A statement from the refinery management confirmed the approval. Officials explained that the recall aimed to restore skilled personnel to key roles while maintaining operational stability. The company also planned to hire new engineers to fill existing vacancies.

Management issued a clear warning to the recalled engineers. It stated that any further misconduct would attract immediate and decisive sanctions. The company stressed the need for discipline and commitment to safety and productivity standards at the refinery.

PENGASSAN had earlier pushed for full reinstatement at the refinery. Union officials later accepted the redeployment option after negotiations. They described the resolution as a partial win that removed the label of sabotage from the affected workers.

The engineers involved had received specialised training, including overseas programmes. Some sources noted that the episode caused a temporary loss of expertise at the facility.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery continued operations throughout the period. The recall signalled an effort to rebuild technical capacity while enforcing strict conduct rules.

The incident highlighted ongoing tensions between the refinery and organised labour in Nigeria’s energy sector. Both sides reached an understanding that allowed engineers to return to work under new terms.
