Arsenal defeated Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final on Tuesday. The London club secured a 1-0 win at the Emirates Stadium for a 2-1 aggregate triumph. This result marked Arsenal’s first appearance in the Champions League final since 2006.
Arsenal traveled to Madrid for the first leg on April 29. The teams drew 1-1 at the Metropolitano Stadium. Viktor Gyokeres converted a penalty for Arsenal in the 43rd minute. Julian Alvarez equalized from the spot for Atletico Madrid in the 55th minute. Referee decisions, including a late overturned penalty for Arsenal, kept the tie level heading into the return fixture.
Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of the second leg late in the first half. The winger finished a move to give Arsenal a 1-0 lead on the night and a one-goal cushion on aggregate. Arsenal controlled much of the match while Atletico Madrid pushed forward after the break. Arsenal defenders William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes repelled several threats as the home side held firm until the final whistle.
Manager Mikel Arteta praised his players’ resilience after the match. “The team showed character and discipline throughout both legs,” Arteta said. “We deserved to go through.”
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone reflected on the elimination. “We gave everything but Arsenal were clinical in key moments,” Simeone stated.
The full-time whistle triggered celebrations among Arsenal supporters at the Emirates. The victory ended a 20-year wait for a Champions League final berth. Arsenal will face the winner of the other semi-final, either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich, at the Puskas Arena in Budapest on May 30.
