EPL: Guimarães’ Late Winner Seals Arsenal’s 2-1 Comeback Victory Over Leeds

Arsenal recovered from a deficit to defeat Leeds United 2-1 in the Premier League at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The result lifted Arsenal to second place on 15 points, level with Manchester City on points but behind on goal difference.

The home side started slowly after a 3-0 loss to Brighton before the international break. Leeds controlled parts of the first half and created several chances. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya made key saves to keep the score level at the interval.

Leeds broke the deadlock in the 55th minute. Gabriel Gudmundsson pulled the ball back from the left and James Justin struck it firmly into the net. The visitors led 1-0 and looked set to cause an upset against the champions.

Arsenal responded quickly. In the 62nd minute, Noni Madueke delivered a cross into the box. Ben White headed the ball across goal and Riccardo Calafiori steered it past Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford to equalise.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta then made substitutions. He introduced Bruno Guimaraes, Jurrien Timber and Viktor Gyokeres. The changes brought fresh energy to the team.

Guimaraes scored the winner in the 70th minute. Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka combined with Declan Rice, who produced a backheel. Guimaraes received the ball on the edge of the area and placed a low shot into the far corner.

Arsenal created further chances late on. Trafford denied Saka in a one-on-one situation in the final moments. Leeds pushed forward but could not find an equaliser.

After the match, Guimaraes said: “It feels unbelievable. I felt in the last game against Brighton we were not at the level. Today the mentality was bouncing back. My job if on the bench is to give a headache to the manager. I have been proving myself in the Premier League but it was important for me today. Leeds have a great team, a top game. Glad we could get the three points.”

The victory gave Arsenal five wins from six league matches this season. Leeds remained fifth on nine points.
