Fear has returned to parts of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State following a series of attacks that reportedly claimed four lives across four communities within three days.
Among those killed was 55-year-old Geoffrey Gumut, who the Mwaghavul Youth Movement said was beheaded in Kikyau, Mangu Halle District, on September 11. Another resident was also seriously wounded in a separate attack.
The latest violence was reported in Kinat on the night of September 12, where 29-year-old Katbam Titus was killed. The Mwaghavul Development Association said the incident occurred just hours after the General Officer Commanding, 3 Division, Nigerian Army, held a security meeting with Mwaghavul and Fulani leaders in Mangu.
The association said the GOC had pledged that the military would take action against anyone responsible for further attacks.
The statement quoted him as saying, “I will not watch any group attack another. The Army would clamp down on those responsible for further attacks.”
Despite the assurance, the movement said another attack occurred shortly afterwards, prompting renewed calls for decisive security action across vulnerable communities.
In Kikyau, the group alleged that Gumut was attacked and beheaded by armed assailants. It said his head had still not been recovered when the statement was issued, adding to the severity of the incident.
The group also reported an attack in Larkas, Panyam District, where 45-year-old Danjuma Kyesle was allegedly attacked with a machete. He was reportedly receiving medical treatment after the incident.
In another attack in Ntul, Mangu District, 50-year-old Pius Dachen and 25-year-old Zadok Irmiya were reportedly killed.
The Mwaghavul Youth Movement described the incidents as “Four incidents. Four communities. Multiple victims,” while demanding thorough investigations into each case.
The group also raised concerns about the reported presence of security personnel during the Larkas attack and called for an investigation into allegations of negligence or failure of duty.
It appealed to the Federal Government, Plateau State Government and security agencies to strengthen security in vulnerable communities, disrupt armed groups and ensure that those responsible face prosecution.
The movement also called on Fulani leaders who participated in the recent peace meeting to publicly demonstrate their commitment to peace and assist authorities in identifying and discouraging armed elements.
As of the time of reporting, the Nigerian Army 3 Division and Plateau State Police Command had not issued reactions to the latest incidents.
