AS Monaco advanced talks to terminate Paul Pogba’s contract by mutual agreement. The midfielder made just six appearances for the Ligue 1 club after joining on a free transfer in summer 2025.
Pogba signed a two-year deal that was due to run until June 2027. The club informed his representatives several weeks earlier that it planned to end the arrangement. Monaco sought to complete the process by September 1 so the player could find a new club during the transfer window.
Pogba returned to professional football after an anti-doping ban. He debuted for Monaco in November 2025, his first competitive match since September 2023. Injuries repeatedly disrupted his progress. He logged only about 115 minutes across those six outings, all in Ligue 1.
The club had aimed to restore the 33-year-old to previous fitness levels. That effort fell short. Monaco general manager Thiago Scuro earlier stated the situation was complicated.
“We have a lot of respect for him,” Scuro said. “When he first arrived, he was very positive and greatly assisted the younger players. However, the truth is that the project didn’t function well last season, and our expectations were certainly different when we began.”
Pogba sustained a thigh injury during a small-sided training game on Tuesday while Monaco trained at St. George’s Park in England.
The setback came shortly after he returned to group sessions following a right knee problem that caused him to miss several friendlies. Talks about ending the contract had already been under way before this latest issue.
Nice-Matin and Le Parisien reported that Monaco expected to settle the remaining salary owed under the deal. Pogba reportedly took the decision hard because he had intended to see out his contract in the principality.
A source told the BBC that discussions remained ongoing and were expected to conclude soon. Monaco itself had not issued an official comment at the time of the reports.
The World Cup winner with France in 2018 now faces the prospect of becoming a free agent once more if the mutual termination is finalized.
