Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, stated that nobody should doubt the one-term promise made by Peter Obi.
Kwankwaso made the remark during an interview on Channels Television on Monday. He confirmed that Obi, the party’s presidential candidate, had signed a written agreement to serve only one four-year term if elected in 2027.
Kwankwaso explained that the two leaders and the party formalised the arrangement. “We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us,” he said.
He added that the pact covers the period from 2027 to 2031. After that term, power would return to the North under the party’s power-sharing plan.
Kwankwaso expressed personal confidence in the commitment. “Oh yes, I personally believe him. I don’t think, based on what I now know about him, that he will change his mind when the time comes. We are all gentlemen,” he stated.
Furthermore, he noted that both men accepted the need to put the understanding on paper. The former Kano State governor said he took the vice-presidential slot because the pair agreed the South should hold the presidency for four years first.
Peter Obi had previously declared his intention to serve a single term. “I want to be a one-term president because of stability. I would not stay a day, with a gun to my head, longer than four years,” he said.
Kwankwaso linked the agreement to national cohesion. He stressed that the leaders wanted the presidency to move back to the North after the single term so the country could move forward as one family.
