Iranian officials urged citizens to attend the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in large numbers. They framed the event as a chance to honor the late supreme leader and demand vengeance for his death.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker, called for a massive turnout. He stated that the nation’s call for vengeance must ring in the ears of the world. Ghalibaf made the remarks as preparations advanced for the delayed funeral.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei died at age 86 in US-Israeli airstrikes on February 28. The strikes hit his compound in Tehran on the first day of the conflict. Iranian authorities confirmed his death and declared a period of national mourning.
Public viewings begin in Tehran this weekend. A major procession follows on July 6. Ceremonies continue in Qom before the burial in Mashhad on July 9. Officials expect millions to participate and mobilize security forces for the events.
Leaders described the funeral as both a farewell and a demonstration of strength. They used the slogan “We Must Avenge” in official messages. Basij militia members helped organize crowds and maintain order during the processions.
