Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish academic certificates and credentials submitted by all candidates. He made the call on Tuesday while completing his nomination form for the 2027 general elections.
Obi highlighted specific questions in the INEC form. One asked if candidates had ever been adjudged a lunatic. Another inquired whether they had presented forged certificates to the commission. He noted that candidates must answer these with a simple yes or no.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate argued that greater openness would strengthen public confidence. “Why shouldn’t INEC, in the interest of ensuring that our leaders are exemplary in following the rules and to strengthen public confidence in our electoral process, publish the academic certificates and credentials submitted by every candidate seeking elective office?” Obi said.
He added that transparency strengthens democracy and builds public trust. Obi maintained that Nigeria’s problems required leadership defined by competence, character, capacity, compassion, and commitment to service rather than politics as usual.
INEC has not yet responded to Obi’s request. The move comes as political parties prepare for the next election cycle. Obi submitted his form and used the opportunity to question leadership priorities in the country. He emphasized that leaders must follow rules and set examples for citizens.
Analysts view the demand as part of ongoing efforts to improve credibility in Nigeria’s electoral system. Obi’s statement focused solely on the benefits of disclosure without targeting any specific individuals or parties.
