Iraqi officials raised concerns about the country’s future in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. Oil Ministry spokesman Salim Al-Rikabi told Bloomberg that Iraq might reconsider its OPEC membership. He explained that the group needed to approve a significant increase in Iraq’s oil production quota.
Furthermore, Salim Al-Rikabi stated that Iraq currently had no intention of withdrawing. He added that if the organization failed to accommodate the request, a decision would have to be made regarding whether to remain in or withdraw from OPEC.
The spokesman made these remarks as Iraq sought to boost output and revenues after regional conflicts reduced exports.
In addition, the Iraqi Oil Ministry responded to the reports later that day. Ministry officials clarified that suggestions of an imminent exit did not reflect the Iraqi government’s official position. They stressed the importance of reviewing production quotas to match members’ sustainable capacities and Iraq’s economic needs.
Moreover, Iraq participated in recent OPEC+ adjustments. The group increased quotas modestly in previous months, yet Iraqi leaders continued to push for larger allowances. Officials highlighted the country’s expanded production capacity and the need for quotas that supported national development goals.
