The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) announced a significant leadership reshuffle on June 17, 2026. Leader Nnamdi Kanu dissolved the third administration of the group’s Directorate of State (DOS) and inaugurated a fourth administration. He made the announcement through a statement issued from Langerfeld, Germany.
Nnamdi Kanu, who serves as the Supreme Leader of IPOB Worldwide, Head of the Biafra Restoration Project, and Director of Radio Biafra, exercised his authority to end the previous DOS setup. He stated that the move followed a careful assessment of the movement’s performance during a critical period.
Kanu appointed Mazi Chris Nwaogu, a United States-based figure, as the new Head of the Directorate of State. Nwaogu assumed immediate responsibility for administration, coordination, and day-to-day management of IPOB affairs.
The reshuffle included other key positions. IPOB reappointed Comrade Emma Powerful as Spokesperson and Media/Publicity Secretary.
Officials also named additional continental representatives, national coordinators, and departmental heads. The changes aimed to strengthen the group’s operations, according to the statement signed in Kanu’s name.
The third administration operated under Mazi Chika Edoziem since around 2017. Reports indicated that Kanu cited concerns over the welfare of detained members, performance issues, and other administrative matters as reasons for the transition. The new structure took effect immediately after the announcement.
Subsequently, the outgoing Directorate of State responded on June 18, 2026. It suspended the office of the leader held by Nnamdi Kanu and the position of Director of Radio Biafra.
The faction described Kanu’s order as invalid and took steps to protect the movement. This development highlighted divisions within IPOB as both sides asserted their positions.
The reshuffle underscored ongoing dynamics in the self-determination campaign for Biafra. Supporters watched closely as the group navigated the leadership transition.
