Ghana Secure Narrow Win Over Panama as Colombia Cruise Past Uzbekistan 3-1

Ghana secured a narrow victory over Panama while Colombia defeated Uzbekistan in the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage matches on June 17. The results gave both teams early points in their campaigns.

Caleb Yirenkyi scored in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time to hand Ghana a 1-0 win against Panama in Toronto. Brandon Thomas-Asante delivered the cross, and Yirenkyi tapped the ball home. The goal came after a tense, low-scoring match where defenses dominated.

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz watched his side absorb pressure. Panama controlled more possession but failed to convert chances. Benjamin Asare made key saves in goal for Ghana. Antoine Semenyo earned praise for his work rate across the pitch. The win marked Ghana’s first points and boosted their hopes of advancing from Group L.

Luis Diaz starred as Colombia beat Uzbekistan 3-1 in Mexico City. Daniel Munoz opened the scoring in the 40th minute with a volley from a Diaz cross. Abbosbek Fayzullaev equalized for Uzbekistan in the 60th minute with a header. Diaz restored the lead five minutes later with a clinical finish. Jáminton Campaz added a stoppage-time header to seal the result.

Diaz provided a goal and an assist in his World Cup debut. Coach Nestor Lorenzo saw his team control key moments despite Uzbekistan’s resilience in their first-ever World Cup match. The victory placed Colombia at the top of Group K.

Both matches highlighted the competitive nature of the group stage. Ghana and Colombia now prepare for tougher tests ahead as the tournament progresses.
