Chelsea Reach Full Agreement to Appoint Xabi Alonso as New Manager

Chelsea Football Club completed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new manager on Saturday. The club reached a full agreement with the Spaniard after weeks of negotiations. Alonso signed a four-year contract that runs until June 2030.

Chelsea parted ways with previous head coach Liam Rosenior in April 2026 after a difficult run of results. The club then considered several candidates, including Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva. Chelsea officials identified Alonso as their top target because of his tactical approach and recent success.

The 44-year-old Alonso previously managed Bayer Leverkusen, where he guided the team to an unbeaten Bundesliga title. He also had a short spell at Real Madrid before the move to Stamford Bridge. Alonso visited London last week for direct talks with the Chelsea hierarchy.

During negotiations, Alonso secured greater influence over transfer decisions. Club directors Joe Shields and Paul Winstanley will work alongside him on summer recruitment. This arrangement gave Alonso more control than recent managers, including Enzo Maresca. Sources close to the talks confirmed that both parties agreed on all contract clauses.

Chelsea officials stated that Alonso will arrive in London next week to finalise paperwork and undergo the official announcement. The deal includes clear provisions for squad building aligned with Alonso’s football philosophy.

Alonso takes charge of a Chelsea side that features key players such as Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo. The new manager aims to shape the team for a stronger push in the Premier League and other competitions. His arrival marks a fresh chapter at Stamford Bridge as the club seeks stability and success.
