UAE Announces Exit From OPEC And OPEC+

The United Arab Emirates announced its decision to exit both OPEC and OPEC+. The move came on April 28 2026. Consequently, the UAE will leave the organizations effective May 1 2026. This development marked a significant shift in the global oil alliance.

UAE officials stated that the country sought greater flexibility over its oil production policy. Additionally, the decision followed ongoing disagreements within the group regarding output quotas and market strategy. As a result, the UAE aimed to pursue independent production targets aligned with its economic diversification goals.

The announcement surprised many analysts and market participants. Furthermore, it raised immediate questions about the future cohesion of OPEC+. Oil prices reacted with volatility in early trading hours following the news.

The exit allowed the UAE to increase its oil output without group-imposed limits. In addition, industry observers expected the move to influence production levels in the coming months. However, the full effects on global supply remained unclear in the short term.

OPEC officials acknowledged the UAE decision. A senior OPEC representative said, “We respect the sovereign decision of the United Arab Emirates and remain committed to market stability.”

The departure added pressure on the remaining OPEC+ members. Furthermore, it highlighted existing tensions over production cuts and quota allocations. As a result, the alliance must now adjust its strategy to maintain influence over world oil markets.

UAE Minister of Energy Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei addressed the media. He said, “This step enables the UAE to optimize its resources and support long-term economic growth.”

He added, “We will continue to cooperate with international partners while prioritizing national interests.”

The development marked a new chapter for both the UAE and the global oil industry. Meanwhile, other member countries monitored the situation closely.
