The Nigerian diplomatic community faces a significant loss following the sudden death of Mohammed Mahmud Lele. He served as the nation’s ambassador-designate to Algeria until his passing. He was 50 years old.
The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the news through an official statement on Wednesday. Officials expressed deep regret over the departure of the seasoned diplomat. They noted that his death occurred shortly before he was scheduled to officially resume his duties in Algiers.
Mohammed Mahmud Lele built a reputation as a dedicated public servant within the foreign service. He held various positions that contributed to Nigeria’s international relations strategy over two decades. His colleagues describe him as a professional who maintained high standards of integrity throughout his career.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended his condolences to the family of the deceased. The President praised the commitment Lele showed toward representing the interests of Nigeria on the global stage. Furthermore, the Presidency described the loss as a setback for the country’s diplomatic mission in North Africa.
The appointment of Lele to Algeria signaled a move to strengthen bilateral ties between the two African nations. Nigeria and Algeria collaborate frequently on energy security and regional stability. This vacancy now requires the Nigerian government to identify a new representative to continue these high-level discussions.
The ministry has not yet disclosed the specific cause of death. However, preparations for funeral rites are currently underway in accordance with his family’s wishes and Islamic traditions.
