The U.S. Embassy in Abuja issued a security warning on Monday regarding a possible terrorist threat targeting U.S. facilities and U.S. affiliated schools in Nigeria. The diplomatic mission addressed the alert specifically to U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to the West African nation.
The Embassy stated that it had received information indicating potential threats against American interests. Consequently, officials urged citizens to exercise increased caution when visiting designated locations.
The security alert outlined several precautionary measures for U.S. citizens. The Embassy recommended that individuals vary their travel times and routes when journeying to the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and U.S. affiliated schools throughout the country.
Furthermore, the mission advised citizens to increase awareness of their surroundings and avoid predictable routines. In addition, officials suggested that families review general security precautions together to reduce overall risk exposure.
The U.S. Embassy posted the alert on its official website and social media channels. “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S. affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the statement read.
The Embassy also provided specific guidance for protective measures. “The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens take additional precautions when traveling to the U.S. Embassy, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and U.S. affiliated schools, to include varying times and routes,” officials said.
