Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, promised on Tuesday to install solar power systems on every Nigerian roof within 11 months of taking office if voters elect him in 2027.
Adebayo spoke during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme. He stated that his plan would deliver between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar capacity to each household.
Adebayo said his administration would set up solar-panel manufacturing factories across Nigeria. He added that the government would train citizens in installation and maintenance of the systems.
“I promise that between 11 to 15 kilowatts of solar power will be put on every roof within 11 months,” Adebayo said.
He explained that partnerships with countries such as China, Turkey and India would help establish the factories. Nigerians would then operate them, he noted.
Adebayo recalled that he had advised the government on power matters years earlier. In 2001, he said, the Obasanjo administration invited him and he recommended agreements with China or India to build factories and train installers.
He further stated that he had tested the approach in his hometown. There, Adebayo claimed, he trained about 2,000 people. He manufactures solar panels and lithium batteries himself but still imports inverters, he added.
Adebayo criticised earlier rural electrification efforts that relied on costly 33 kVA lines. Instead, he argued, rooftop solar offered a practical alternative.
The solar clusters would power basic household needs such as charging devices, ironing clothes and reading, he said. At the same time, the projects would create jobs. Adebayo projected that the systems could generate up to 32,000 megawatts in total, with the national grid serving mainly as backup.
