Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, and Peter Ameh, the party’s Kogi East senatorial candidate, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure free, fair, transparent and credible 2027 general elections.
They made the call on Sunday in Ogugu, Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State. The event formed part of a thank-you tour after Ameh emerged as the NDC candidate for Kogi East.
Obi addressed a large crowd of supporters. He urged the electoral body to resist any attempt to manipulate the process in favour of any political party. He stressed that the wishes of Nigerian voters must be respected.
Obi told the gathering that his main concern ahead of 2027 was not the final outcome. Instead, he focused on whether citizens would protect their votes.
“I am not worried about what the outcome of the 2027 general election will be. What worries me is the people and how they will protect their votes on election day,” he said.
He noted the hunger and poverty in the land and explained that he came to the area to find ways to ease the suffering of the people.
“My charge to the people is that they must ensure a free, fair and credible election. This time around, our votes must count. Nigerians must elect those who will lead them,” Obi stated.
He further urged voters to choose leaders based on competence, capacity, character, compassion and commitment to national development. Obi added that he had buried his personal interest so that the interests of the people would come first.
Ameh also addressed the supporters. He alleged that previous votes cast by the people had been stolen. He therefore urged voters to remain vigilant and protect their ballots in 2027.
“Today, we are charging the people to go out, vote and protect their votes,” Ameh said.
“It is through the votes they cast that we will have good roads, basic amenities, and secure the future of our children,” he added.
