Seriake Dickson, national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, said ordinary Nigerians could donate as little as N1,000 or N2,000 to support the party’s 2027 campaign.
Dickson made the statement on Wednesday during an appearance on Arise News’ Prime Time programme. He explained that the party planned to raise funds through small contributions from citizens rather than rely on wealthy individuals.
He stated that the NDC remained the only political party in Nigeria not funded through the government treasury. “You cannot allow your democracy to be funded by moneybags and billionaires who are now trillionaires using government resources. You will continue to be oppressed,” Dickson said.
Furthermore, Dickson said the initiative aimed to help poor and oppressed Nigerians break free from the control of powerful financiers. He added that the party wanted a process in which ordinary citizens could contribute small amounts, as practised in other countries.
“We want a process by which Nigerians, ordinary Nigerians, can contribute N1,000, N2,000, as it happens all over the world,” he stated.
Dickson noted that such grassroots funding would reduce the influence of moneybags who often use financial power to control the democratic process.
Meanwhile, Dickson disclosed that consultations continued over the composition of the party’s presidential campaign council for the 2027 election. He said the NDC would announce the full membership only after the consultations ended.
He stressed that the party preferred not to rush the release of any list that might later require changes. Dickson also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies and other relevant bodies to ensure free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
