Wike Says Turaki Faction’s Appeal Won’t Stop PDP Convention

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike dismissed the appeal filed by the Kabiru Turaki led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party at the Supreme Court.

Wike spoke on Friday night after he inspected preparations at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. He stated clearly that the legal move would not halt the national convention set for March 29 and 30.

Wike visited the Valodrome section of the stadium. He confirmed that arrangements stood at 95 percent completion. Seating plans for all states had been finalized and the VIP area stood ready.

Moreover the minister was accompanied by key party figures including National Convention Planning Committee Chairman Okezie Ikpeazu PDP Board of Trustees Chairman Mao Ohuabunwa and National Caretaker Working Committee Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman.

Wike described the Supreme Court appeal as baseless. He added that the convention would proceed without interruption. Furthermore he explained that internal grievances always arise in large groups. Wike said, I have always said that in any group there will be grievances.

You cannot expect that in a family of two or three people everyone will always be satisfied let alone a party with millions of members. There will always be a few who are not happy. We have agreed to sit down with them to understand their concerns and see how we can accommodate them. What is most important is the overall interest of the party.

Additionally Wike noted that the party had already zoned key positions. He stated quote We have already zoned our positions. Every zone has its own slots. The presidency has been zoned to the South while the chairmanship is zoned to the North. We believe this consensus arrangement will make the process easier.

Wike stressed that the PDP remained one united party. He added that reconciliation talks would continue after the convention. The minister also predicted that the party would make a strong showing in the 2027 general elections.

The Turaki led faction had filed the appeal on Friday following a Court of Appeal ruling that nullified its earlier convention held in Ibadan in November 2025.
