The United States government issued a global security alert to its citizens in Nigeria and around the world on Sunday. The State Department released the advisory amid escalating hostilities between the United States and Iran.
The alert urged Americans to exercise increased caution following recent United States attacks against Iran. It warned that evolving security conditions could affect travel and safety, including potential interruptions to air travel.
“Following the launch of U.S. combat operations in Iran, Americans worldwide and especially in the Middle East should follow the guidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” the advisory stated.
The State Department specifically noted that Americans may experience travel disruptions due to periodic airspace closures. Furthermore, the department advised Americans worldwide to exercise increased caution.
The alert recommended that United States citizens enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive timely security updates. Additionally, the statement encouraged American citizens to follow the “U.S. Department of State Security Updates for US Citizens” WhatsApp channel for further information.
President Donald Trump stated that Iran’s leadership agreed to resume negotiations with the United States following the strikes on multiple Iranian cities. Trump said Tehran reached out for talks and that he accepted the offer.
