Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo declared that petrol sold for more than N3,000 per litre in the United Kingdom. He spoke on Thursday during the Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road event in Edo State.
Okpebholo explained that he had visited London the previous week. He then decided to check the local fuel price against Nigeria’s rate.
“When we complained about the cost of petrol, I was in London last week. I told my friend, ‘Let’s go and buy fuel just to know the cost of fuel between Nigeria and England,’” he said.
“Let me tell you, after conversion, it’s about 3,000-something for one litre of fuel,” Okpebholo added.
The governor stated that the comparison showed Nigerians paid less for petrol. He therefore concluded that the country was managing well.
“We are doing very well here. The President is stabilising the economy. He’s an economist,” Okpebholo said.
He further described President Bola Tinubu as an economist rather than a supermarket operator. Okpebholo then urged critics to wait for their turn if the current leadership ends.
His remarks followed ongoing public concerns over petrol prices. These concerns rose after the federal government removed the fuel subsidy and pump prices adjusted.
Petrol continued to sell at varying rates across Nigerian stations at the time of the governor’s comments. Okpebholo presented the UK figure as evidence that local consumers faced a more favourable situation.
