Newcastle United dominated large spells but had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie on Tuesday night.
A stoppage-time penalty from Lamine Yamal cancelled out Harvey Barnes’ late strike, leaving the tie finely poised ahead of next week’s second leg in Spain.
Eddie Howe’s side made a blistering start at St. James’ Park. The Magpies pressed high and forced the Spanish visitors onto the back foot immediately. Midfielder Sandro Tonali forced an early save from goalkeeper Joan Garcia in the opening minutes. Winger Anthony Elanga also tested Garcia from distance, but the offside flag had already been raised against the winger.

Despite their dominance, Newcastle failed to convert pressure into goals. Forward William Osula headed wide from an Elanga cross in the first half. Barcelona grew into the contest gradually, but Robert Lewandowski remained isolated and quiet in attack. Defender Dan Burn nearly turned a cross into his own net, but the ball drifted just wide.
Howe introduced forward Anthony Gordon and winger Jacob Murphy just past the hour mark to inject fresh energy. The changes paid dividends with four minutes remaining in regular time. Murphy delivered a precise cross from the byline, and Barnes met it perfectly to side-foot home from close range.

The goal sent the home crowd into raptures. Barnes had struck the post moments earlier, and Joelinton saw a follow-up effort ruled out for offside. The stadium sensed a famous victory over the five-time European champions.
Deep into stoppage time, the tie turned dramatically. Defender Malick Thiaw tripped midfielder Dani Olmo inside the box, conceding a penalty with the last action of the game. Lamine Yamal, the 18-year-old winger, stepped up and calmly slotted the spot-kick past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
The final whistle blew immediately after the restart. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick had set his team up conservatively, but the late goal secured a vital away draw. Newcastle walked away wondering what might have been after Barnes‘ celebrations were cut short. Both sides will reconvene at the Camp Nou next week with everything to play for.
