Atletico Madrid punished a series of defensive errors from Tottenham Hotspur to claim a 5-2 victory in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie at the Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday night. The result leaves the Premier League side with a significant challenge ahead of the second leg in London.
Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky endured a nightmare evening on his Champions League debut. The 22-year-old, making his first start since October, slipped while attempting to clear the ball in the sixth minute. Forward Julian Alvarez seized the opportunity and squared the ball for midfielder Marcos Llorente to open the scoring.
Defender Micky van de Ven then lost his footing moments later, allowing forward Antoine Griezmann to double the lead in the 14th minute. Kinsky compounded the misery just a minute later, miskicking a clearance straight to Alvarez, who walked the ball into an empty net.
Manager Igor Tudor made the ruthless decision to substitute Kinsky in the 17th minute, bringing on Guglielmo Vicario. The change did not stem the tide immediately. Goalkeeper Vicario pushed Griezmann’s free kick onto the crossbar, and defender Robin Le Normand headed home the rebound in the 22nd minute to make it 4-0.
Tottenham showed some resilience before the interval. Defender Pedro Porro combined with forward Richarlison in the 26th minute, firing past goalkeeper Jan Oblak to reduce the deficit. Defender Cristian Romero then headed against the post as the visitors pushed for another goal.
Diego Simeone’s side reasserted control ten minutes after the restart. A rapid counter-attack, initiated by Oblak’s save, saw Griezmond release Alvarez with a deft touch. Alvarez raced from inside his own half to score his second goal of the night.
“We’re very happy with the win and the three-goal lead, but there are still 90 minutes left to play on their home turf,” Alvarez told Movistar Plus after the match.
Tottenham grabbed a late consolation when Oblak made an error in the 76th minute. The goalkeeper miscontrolled the ball, and substitute Dominic Solanke punished the mistake with a powerful finish.
