The Nigerian Senate confirmed Jamila Abubakar-Sadiq as national electoral commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission on March 12 2026. Lawmakers took the step during plenary after President Bola Tinubu nominated her in February.
President Bola Tinubu sent the nomination to the Senate on February 17. Jamila Abubakar-Sadiq a retired rear admiral from Adamawa State represents the North-East zone. She also holds the distinction as the first northern woman to reach the rank of rear admiral in the Nigerian Navy. The Senate Committee on Electoral Matters screened her earlier.
Senator Simon Lalong the APC lawmaker from Plateau South presented the committee report. He recommended confirmation. The committee based its decision on her qualifications, experience, performance and integrity.
The Senate considered the report and confirmed Jamila Abubakar-Sadiq by voice vote. Senate President Godswill Akpabio led the session. He congratulated all nominees after the votes.
Godswill Akpabio said I congratulate the nominees and wish them fruitful endeavours in their respective assignments. He added I also thank Mr President for selecting the right people for the right appointments. Congratulations to all.
Additionally Godswill Akpabio commended the committees for their diligent screening. He expressed confidence that the new commissioner would enhance Nigeria’s electoral system.
The Senate also confirmed other nominees that day. These included Usman Isa Dakingari as non-career ambassador and Ismail Abba Yusuf as chairman of the National Hajj Commission. Lawmakers then adjourned plenary until March 31 for Eid al-Fitr and Easter.
