Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde directed political appointees eyeing elective offices to declare their intentions for the 2027 general elections. He issued the directive on Thursday at the state government organised 2026 Iftar programme held at Government House, Agodi, Ibadan.
Governor Seyi Makinde assured the appointees of his support. He however stressed that their loyalty must remain with the people of the state and its overall development. Furthermore, he told them to pursue their ambitions strictly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Governor Seyi Makinde addressed claims making the rounds on social media. The claims suggested that he had not approved any of his appointees to contest political positions.
“I have read on the social media that I have not given the go-ahead to political appointees who have ambitions to hold different political offices, including the governorship seat. So, henceforth, you are free. Whoever wants to contest for any position should bring out their billboards. And those of you who are bothered about the PDP crisis, add the party’s logo to the billboard, nothing will happen,” Governor Seyi Makinde stated.
Additionally, Special Adviser on Media Sulaimon Olarenwaju released a formal statement on Friday that captured the directive.
Governor Seyi Makinde used the occasion to thank Muslim residents of the state. He appreciated them for their prayers and cooperation which contributed to the progress recorded in Oyo State.
Meanwhile notable figures such as former Governor Rashidi Ladoja attended the Iftar event. The announcement has now cleared the way for interested appointees to begin open campaigns.
