Tottenham Hotspur confirmed the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as the club’s new head coach. The Premier League side made the announcement on Tuesday after weeks of negotiations.
Club officials stated that De Zerbi agreed to a long-term contract that runs until June 2031. They added that the deal included a high annual salary along with performance bonuses tied to avoiding relegation.
Roberto De Zerbi stepped in immediately following the exit of interim head coach Igor Tudor. Tudor left the position by mutual consent after only 44 days in charge. During his brief tenure, the team collected just one point from five matches.
De Zerbi previously managed Brighton and Marseille. He initially preferred to wait until the summer for new opportunities. However, he changed his stance and accepted the role now after Tottenham accelerated talks.
The move represented Tottenham’s third head coach appointment in the current season. Club sources said the decision aimed to stabilize the squad before players returned from international duty.
De Zerbi earned praise for his attacking style during his time at Brighton. Tottenham officials believed his approach would suit the team’s needs. They also highlighted his experience in building competitive squads.
Some Tottenham supporter groups expressed concerns over past statements De Zerbi made about player Mason Greenwood while at Marseille. In November 2025, De Zerbi described Greenwood as a good guy who paid a heavy price for his situation. The groups urged the club to consider its values before finalizing the hire.
Despite the backlash, Tottenham proceeded with the appointment. The club planned to introduce De Zerbi to the squad and media in the coming days.
De Zerbi built his reputation through progressive tactics in Italy and England. He left Marseille earlier in the season and became available for new roles. Tottenham viewed him as the leading candidate once they decided to move away from the interim setup.
The confirmation brought an end to speculation that dominated football headlines for several days. Tottenham now focused on integrating the new coach ahead of crucial remaining fixtures.
