Nigeria Fail to Make Cut as CAF Confirms 16 Teams for U-17 AFCON
The Confederation of African Football confirmed the 16 qualified teams for the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations 2026. Algeria earned the final qualification spot after they defeated Egypt 1-0 in the UNAF zone decider.
The full list included Algeria, Angola, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. Morocco gained automatic entry as hosts.
Nigeria however remained absent from the tournament. The Golden Eaglets suffered a 2-0 defeat to Ghana in the semi-final of the WAFU Zone B qualifiers in September 2025.
This result ended their campaign and marked their second consecutive absence from the U-17 AFCON. Officials from the Nigeria Football Federation noted the team had shown promise earlier in the qualifiers but could not advance.
Organisers scheduled the competition to run from April 25 to May 15 2026 in Morocco. The expanded 16-team format gave more nations a chance to compete. Moreover the event served as the direct pathway for African teams to the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar. The top 10 finishers at the finals secured automatic qualification spots.
Qualification unfolded across six CAF zones with intense matches that decided every berth. Algeria and Egypt fought for the last UNAF place while WAFU zones produced strong representatives including Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal and Mali.
As a result only the best performers from each region joined the finals. Nigeria’s absence stood out given the nation’s rich history of producing young talent. The teams now prepare for the Morocco showdown where Africa’s future stars will battle for continental glory and World Cup tickets.
