My Mum is Yoruba From Ogun, While My Dad Is Igbo From Oni-Chugbo, A Small Village In Delta -Onwaeze

Nnamdi Adeboye Onwaeze, a track and field athlete with Nigerian-American heritage, recently spoke about his family background and connection to Nigeria. He said his mother is Yoruba from Abeokuta in Ogun State, while his father is Ibo from a small village called Oni-Chugbo in Delta State.

In a report by The Nation on Sunday August 31, 2025, he said his middle name, Adeboye, comes from his mother’s side. According to him, he has been travelling to Nigeria every winter since he was ten years old. He said he visits his father’s village to spend time with his grandmother and learn more about his roots.

He said his father runs a charity called the Kojo Fundraiser. According to him, the group helps children by giving out school supplies. He said this effort is important to his family and shows how they care about helping others.

According to him,

“My middle name, Adeboye, is because my mum is Yoruba from Abeokuta in Ogun State, while my dad is Ibo from Oni-Chugbo, a small village in Delta State. I’ve been visiting Nigeria every winter since I was ten. I go to my dad’s side in Oni-Chugbo to see my grandma. My dad has a fundraiser called Kojo fundraiser, which does school supplies for children.
