Manchester United Battle to 2-2 Draw with Bournemouth After Maguire Sees Red

Manchester United twice seized control against Bournemouth but surrendered both advantages in a frantic second half. The visitors finished with 10 men after defender Harry Maguire received a straight red card. Caretaker manager Michael Carrick saw his side hold firm to claim a point at the Vitality Stadium on March 20, 2026.

United captain Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty in the 61st minute. Matheus Cunha went down after a shirt pull from Bournemouth defender Alex Jimenez.

Fernandes rolled the ball calmly into the bottom left corner past goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. The goal gave United the advantage after an even first half marked by strong saves from both keepers.

Bournemouth responded swiftly six minutes later. Ryan Christie swept a low shot into the bottom right corner from inside the area. The strike followed a quick counter attack. United felt aggrieved as referee Stuart Attwell ignored a similar shirt pull on winger Amad Diallo just before the goal. However the score stood at 1-1.

United regained control in the 71st minute through a bizarre own goal. Defender James Hill diverted a corner from Bruno Fernandes into his own net while under pressure from Harry Maguire.

The deflection restored the visitors’ advantage at 2-1. Bournemouth pushed forward but failed to convert chances including a strike that rattled the crossbar from Alex Scott.

The turning point arrived in the 78th minute. Defender Harry Maguire tugged back striker Evanilson as the Bournemouth forward burst clear. Referee Attwell issued a straight red card for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity and awarded a penalty.

Substitute Junior Kroupi stepped up and thumped the spot kick into the bottom left corner in the 81st minute to level the scores at 2 2.

Despite the numerical disadvantage United organised their defence well during nine minutes of added time. Carrick made tactical adjustments and the visitors prevented further concessions.

Bournemouth extended their unbeaten run to 11 matches and recorded a fifth straight draw. United remained third in the table.

After the match United captain Bruno Fernandes said We get a penalty against us where more or less it is the same situation as Amad. One is rewarded as a penalty, the other one not.

Caretaker manager Michael Carrick added We should have had another penalty. It is pretty much identical for me. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola noted It is a very entertaining game. We played well but we were looking for the win at the end.
