Kano Deputy Governor, Abdussalam Resigns Amid Impeachment Plot, Political Pressure

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam, has resigned from office following mounting political pressure and impeachment proceedings initiated against him by the Kano State House of Assembly.

The development was disclosed on Friday in a statement issued by Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

According to the statement, Abdussalam tendered his resignation in what the movement described as a decision taken in the interest of political stability and effective governance in Kano State.

The statement read, “The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform the general public, the good people of Kano State, and the entire nation that the Deputy Governor of Kano State has tendered his resignation from office.”

The resignation comes days after the Kano State House of Assembly began impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor over allegations that had generated intense political tension within the state’s leadership.

Abdussalam had earlier approached a Federal High Court sitting in Kano in a bid to stop the impeachment process.

However, on Wednesday, the court declined his application seeking to halt the proceedings, effectively allowing the assembly to continue with its action.

In the statement, the Kwankwasiyya Movement said the decision to step down from office was not an easy one, but was made after careful consideration of the political situation and its implications for governance in the state.

It noted that the circumstances surrounding the deputy governor’s office had made it difficult for him to fully discharge the responsibilities associated with the position.

“Recent circumstances have, to a considerable extent, constrained the full realization of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office of the Deputy Governor. In view of this, it has become imperative to allow the office to function optimally in the best interest of the public it is meant to serve.”

The movement also emphasised that Abdussalam’s resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of the allegations raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly. The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people.”

It further described the decision as a demonstration of statesmanship aimed at preserving peace in Kano State and preventing political tension that could disrupt governance and development efforts.

According to the movement, Abdussalam chose to step aside to prevent the situation from escalating into a prolonged political crisis capable of undermining the stability of the state’s administration.

The statement also revealed that the former deputy governor would now devote more time to political activities within the Kwankwasiyya Movement, particularly as preparations begin ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The Deputy Governor has also resolved to dedicate more time and energy to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, particularly in strengthening its structures, rebuilding strategies, and engaging in critical political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the statement added.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement, a major political bloc in Kano State politics, urged its members and supporters to remain calm and law-abiding despite the unfolding political developments.

It also appealed to residents of Kano State to remain committed to democratic values and the principles of good governance.

“The movement calls on all its supporters and the good people of Kano State to remain calm, law-abiding, and steadfast in their commitment to the ideals of democracy and good governance.”

It added that further details regarding the political situation and subsequent steps would be communicated to the public in due course.
