Gabon suspended major social media platforms after its media regulator cited the spread of false information, cyberbullying and the unauthorised disclosure of personal data.
The High Authority for Communication announced the immediate suspension of social media platforms until further notice. Officials made the decision on Tuesday February 17 2026.
HAC spokesperson Jean-Claude Mendome delivered the announcement during a televised statement. He explained that online content had fuelled conflict and deepened divisions in the country.
Jean-Claude Mendome cited the spread of false information as a primary concern. He also pointed to cyberbullying and the unauthorised disclosure of personal data as serious issues.
Additionally, the spokesperson highlighted defamatory, hateful and insulting material on the platforms. Such content threatened social cohesion, institutional stability and national security.
As a result, users lost access to services such as Facebook and TikTok. Restrictions also affected Instagram and YouTube in several areas across Gabon.
The High Authority for Communication stated that the measure would stay in force until further notice. Authorities continued to monitor the situation closely.
