A former lawmaker from Kaduna State, Shehu Bawa, distributed more than 10,000 bags of rice to residents facing economic difficulties. The distribution took place during the concurrent observance of Ramadan by Muslims and Lent by Christians. Bawa organized the initiative to support vulnerable households across the state.
Bawa identified widows, orphans, and persons with disabilities as primary beneficiaries of the relief materials. He also included elderly residents and low-income families in the distribution plan. The former lawmaker stated that the gesture aimed to reduce the burden of rising food prices on these groups.
The distribution extended to religious institutions as well. Bawa provided rice to mosques and churches to support communal feeding programs during the fasting periods. Additionally, he gave the commodity to traditional rulers for onward distribution to their communities.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Bawa explained the motivation behind the initiative. He said, “This gesture is to cushion the effect of the economic hardship being experienced by the people.” He added that the distribution reflected his commitment to the welfare of Kaduna residents.
Furthermore, Bawa urged other well-meaning Nigerians to support vulnerable populations. He stated, “I call on wealthy individuals to come to the aid of the less privileged in our society.” He emphasized that collective action remained essential for addressing poverty.
