The federal government announced the immediate suspension of all pilgrimages to Israel on Tuesday. The decision stemmed from escalating security concerns in the Middle East region.
Stephen Adegbite, executive secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission, issued the statement in Abuja. He explained that recent developments in the region prompted the action.
Security Concerns Drive Decision
Adegbite stated that the suspension became necessary following recent developments in the region. He emphasized that the safety of Nigerian pilgrims remained the primary consideration.
“The decision became necessary following recent developments in the region,” Adegbite said.
Commission Prioritizes Pilgrim Safety
The NCPC executive secretary noted that the commission would monitor the situation closely. Furthermore, he indicated that the suspension would remain in effect until the security situation improved.
Adegbite added that the commission would review the decision periodically. He also assured intending pilgrims that the federal government would resume the pilgrimage program once conditions permitted safe travel.
Regional Tensions Escalate
Tensions in the Middle East have intensified in recent months. Conflicts between Israel and neighboring territories have created unstable conditions throughout the region.
As a result, several countries have issued travel advisories for the area. The Nigerian government joined these nations in restricting travel to the conflict zone.
Next Steps for Intending Pilgrims
The NCPC advised all registered pilgrims to await further instructions. The commission promised to communicate updates through official channels.
Additionally, the executive secretary urged pilgrims to remain patient. He confirmed that the federal government would protect their interests during the suspension period.
