Electricity Struggles Spark Debate as Obi Points Back to Tinubu’s Campaign Promise

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made a clear electoral promise during the 2023 campaign. He declared, “If I don’t give you constant electricity in four years, don’t vote for me for a second term.”

On April 2 2026 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu travelled to Jos in Plateau State. He stopped at the airport to meet families of victims killed in a recent attack. The visit lasted only 10 minutes. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu explained the short stay. He told the grieving families, “You have no electricity at the airport and I must depart within the next 10 minutes.”

The president expressed frustration over the outage. He said he could offer only condolences because time did not allow more. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu promised the tragedy would not happen again but stressed the immediate power problem at the facility.

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi responded swiftly. He posted on X and titled his message “Tinubu in Jos Confirms ‘Don’t Vote for Me’ Prediction on Power Supply.”

Peter Obi quoted the original campaign promise. He noted the irony of the president highlighting electricity failure at a major state airport. Peter Obi added that the incident showed Nigerians the reality of unfulfilled pledges.

The comment drew attention across social media. Many Nigerians recalled the 2023 assurance as grid collapses continued into 2026. Peter Obi urged citizens to remember the words. He stated the Jos event offered a clear example of the power challenges that persisted nationwide.
