In a major development ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria, presidential aspirants under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) — including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi — have reportedly reached a preliminary agreement to support whoever emerges as the Party’s presidential candidate, provided the selection process is transparent and credible.
Speaking to journalists over the weekend, Rotimi Amaechi emphasized that the pact rests squarely on the condition that the primaries are free from manipulation or internal hijack.
“What we agreed is that whoever emerges from a transparent primary will be supported by everyone. But first, we need to define what we mean by the word ‘transparent,’ “Amaechi said.
The move signals a rare political alignment among former presidential hopefuls from rival parties, suggesting that the ADC may be positioning itself as a credible third-force alternative ahead of the next elections.
Amid speculations that the ADC might zone its presidential ticket to the North, possibly favouring Atiku Abubakar, the Party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator David Mark, dismissed claims of bias or pre-selection.
“The ADC has no preferred candidate. The primaries under my leadership will be absolutely transparent and reflect the will of our members,” Mark assured.
Political analysts say the coming together of such high-profile politicians under the ADC banner could reshape the dynamics of the upcoming election, although questions remain about how the Party will manage internal competition, zoning debates, and grassroots mobilization.
As the primary season approaches, all eyes will be on how the ADC balances its newfound political weight with calls for internal democracy.
