EPL: Carrick Set to Remain in Charge of Man Utd for Chelsea Test

Michael Carrick remained in charge of Manchester United for their Premier League trip to Chelsea on Saturday. Multiple reports confirmed the decision on Tuesday.

Sources told BBC Sport that the 45-year-old would receive the opportunity to turn results around following a difficult start to the season. Carrick oversaw training at Carrington on Tuesday morning as the squad prepared for the match at Stamford Bridge.

Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth extended United’s winless run to eight matches in all competitions. The result left the team one place above the relegation zone.

United’s hierarchy had explored possible replacements. Reports linked former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and former Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann with the role. However, the club opted against an immediate change.

Director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada discussed Carrick’s future at Carrington on Monday. They later decided to retain him for the Chelsea fixture.

A United insider stated: “Michael and the players will have the opportunity to turn the situation around. Everyone is focused on preparing the team for Saturday and showing our response on the pitch. Training is taking place as usual.”

Carrick took interim charge in January after Ruben Amorim’s departure. He later earned a permanent two-year contract in May after guiding the side to a third-place finish and Champions League qualification. United have won only one of their eight Premier League matches this season.
