Salihu Lukman, the convener of the G100 political pressure group, said opposition parties would select one presidential candidate to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general election.
Lukman spoke during an interview on Channels Television’s Hard Copy programme on Saturday. He expressed confidence that the parties remained committed to the plan.
Lukman stated that the single candidate could emerge at different stages before the polls. He said the announcement might come months, weeks or even a few days before the election.
“I can tell you categorically, and my confidence about that comes from what I see in the leadership of the parties: they are committed and they are working, taking all the steps necessary,” he said.
He continued, “So it could be two months, some weeks to the election, or a few days to the election, they will come out and tell Nigerians this is the direction, and everybody will jump.”
The G100 emerged after an opposition summit held in Ibadan in April 2026. That meeting called for a united front and a consensus presidential candidate against the APC.
A follow-up meeting on August 31 agreed to establish five working groups. One of those groups took responsibility for selecting a single presidential candidate.
Lukman explained that each party would nominate its own representatives to join the process. He said this structure ensured the parties and their candidates controlled the decisions rather than outsiders.
According to Lukman, the plan already involved more than six opposition parties. He added that efforts continued to bring additional parties into the alliance.
He noted that the eventual candidate could emerge under the African Democratic Congress, another participating party or a new platform formed through the alliance.
