Kalu Kalu Agu, the African Democratic Congress candidate for the 2027 Abia governorship election, issued a direct challenge to Alex Otti, the state governor, over projects in Ohafia. Agu made the statement during a campaign engagement in the area.
He told supporters that the governor should present evidence of completed work. “Show one project in Ohafia, and I will quit the governorship race,” Agu said. He added that the people of Ohafia had waited too long for tangible results under the current administration.
Agu stressed that his campaign would focus on visible development across Abia North. He noted that roads, schools and health facilities in Ohafia remained in poor condition. Furthermore, he accused the government of concentrating projects in other parts of the state while neglecting the local government.
Meanwhile, the ADC candidate linked the challenge to broader concerns about equity. He stated that Ohafia residents deserved the same attention given to other areas. Agu also promised that an ADC government would prioritise the region if elected.
Alex Otti, the Labour Party governor, has previously listed infrastructure works across Abia as evidence of progress. His administration has highlighted road reconstructions and other initiatives since taking office. However, Agu maintained that Ohafia had seen little of that impact.
In response to the challenge, political observers noted that the 2027 contest already featured multiple candidates. The Independent National Electoral Commission listed twelve aspirants for the February poll. Otti seeks a second term on the Labour Party platform with Ikechukwu Emetu as his running mate.
Agu continued his tour of communities after the statement. He urged voters to demand accountability from leaders. The ADC candidate also called on residents to support a change in leadership come 2027.
The exchange added to the intensifying debate over governance records ahead of the election. Both sides are expected to present further claims on projects in the coming weeks.
