The administration of United States President Donald Trump planned a munitions package worth 2.8 billion dollars for Israel. Reports on Tuesday indicated the deal included tens of thousands of heavy bombs.
A United States official familiar with the matter said the package contained 20,000 MK-84 bombs and 20,000 BLU-117 bombs. These are 2,000-pound munitions. The official added that the sale also included 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator warheads.
The planned sale had been informally communicated to relevant congressional committees. Those committees review large arms transfers. News of the package first appeared in The Washington Post.
The State Department and the Israeli embassy did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Meanwhile, a senior administration official told AFP that all foreign arms sales move through the appropriate process. The official declined to discuss pending transactions.
A State Department spokesperson told AFP that as a matter of policy the department does not confirm or comment on proposed arms sales until they have been formally notified to Congress.
The package ranked among the largest single sales of this type of munition to Israel in recent years. Earlier in 2025 the Trump administration had approved other large arms deals for Israel. The 2,000-pound bombs had previously drawn scrutiny from rights experts over their use in Gaza and Lebanon.
Reports noted that United States public support for Israel had declined since the Gaza war began in 2023. A June Quinnipiac University poll found that 48 percent of voters believed the United States was too supportive of Israel.
