The Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 presidential election. The announcement came on Wednesday during the grand finale of the group’s 2026 synod at the National Christian Centre in Abuja.
Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas, president-general of the conference, made the declaration on behalf of the body. He said the bishops reviewed the administration’s record and found clear evidence of balance.
Kawas stated that the conference had earlier raised concerns about the Muslim-Muslim ticket of 2023. However, the appointments that followed changed their view. “President Bola Tinubu came and balanced our diversity so very well. There is no iota of nepotism,” he said.
He noted that Tinubu supported the emergence of Christian governors in several states. He also pointed to the appointment of a Christian, Nentawe Yilwatda, as national chairman of the All Progressives Congress. In addition, Kawas praised the placement of George Akume as secretary to the government of the federation.
The archbishop then delivered the formal endorsement. “We are here today to reassure him of our solid support. We are standing with him in prayers and advocacy for the good programmes he has brought forth for the liberation of Nigeria,” Kawas said.
He continued, “We stand with the president today, and as long as he is willing to be our president and even come in 2027, we will still be standing with him. On this, this house has endorsed him for the 2027 presidency.”
Kawas further urged the government to include more religious leaders, both Christian and Muslim, in political appointments. He explained that churches often serve as the first point of contact for citizens facing hardship.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume and Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris attended the event. The synod drew bishops from across Nigeria and the international charismatic network.
