Google is bringing a major voice-powered artificial intelligence upgrade to Gmail, Google Docs and Google Keep, allowing eligible users to interact with the applications through natural conversations rather than relying entirely on keyboards and traditional search.
The technology arrives through three new Gemini-powered experiences called Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live. Google says the tools are designed to help people find information, develop ideas and organise their work by simply speaking.
Gmail Live effectively turns the inbox into a conversational assistant. Instead of remembering keywords, opening different messages or scrolling through long conversations, users can ask Gemini questions about information contained in their emails.
The system can maintain context during a conversation, meaning users can ask follow-up questions or interrupt the interaction to refine their request. Google says the feature can be used to quickly retrieve details buried in an inbox, including travel information and updates contained in email conversations.
Google Docs is receiving an equally significant upgrade. Docs Live allows users to talk through an idea and have Gemini help transform that thinking into a structured document. The company describes the feature as a “hands-free thought partner and co-writer.”
Rather than beginning with a blank page, users can explain what they want to create while Gemini organises their thoughts and works toward a first draft. When permission is granted, the AI can also use relevant information from Gmail, Drive, Chat and the web to provide additional context.
Google Keep is designed to solve a different problem. People often have ideas or tasks they want to record quickly but may not have time to type them properly. Keep Live allows users to speak freely, after which Gemini processes the information and turns it into structured notes or lists.
The feature can also understand instructions involving existing notes. For example, users can tell Keep to add an item to a shopping list without manually opening and editing the note.
Google’s rollout began this week, with the features initially available in English to eligible Google AI subscribers. Gmail Live is available across Android and iOS for Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra users, while Docs Live is available to Pro and Ultra subscribers. Keep Live has platform-specific availability, and Google says Workspace business customers will receive the capabilities in a future rollout.
The development signals a broader shift in Google’s AI strategy: instead of making users open a separate chatbot to get things done, Gemini is increasingly being built directly into the applications people already use every day.
