Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, denied reports that he urged Nigerian soldiers to reject any salary increase until after the elections. Obi issued the clarification in a statement posted on his official X account on Tuesday.
He described the report as false and misleading. Obi stated that the claim suggested Nigerian soldiers should refuse salary increments until after the elections. He said this assertion was entirely untrue.
Obi expressed unwavering respect for the security forces. He particularly highlighted Nigerian Army personnel who serve and protect the nation under challenging conditions. He noted that he had consistently advocated for adequate equipment, motivation and protection for security personnel.
Furthermore, Obi recalled his earlier concern over the loss of soldiers to insurgents. He said the deaths resulted from a delayed rescue effort. This situation, he added, prompted him to question how those defending the nation could be left vulnerable.
Obi declared that the well-being, resources, safety and honour of soldiers would become a paramount priority if he were elected president. He stressed that those who ensure Nigeria’s security must never be relegated to a secondary concern.
“Our soldiers are deserving of our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them,” Obi stated. He added that under his leadership, scenarios where servicemen and women are left unprotected in the face of peril would be eradicated.
Obi urged the Nigerian populace to dismiss the report. He reaffirmed his commitment to a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria. He concluded that the realisation of a new and secure Nigeria remained possible.
