Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to a deeper partnership with the International Monetary Fund. Officials from both sides pledged continued collaboration on economic reforms and sustainable growth.
The statement came at a farewell dinner in Abuja. The event honoured outgoing IMF Resident Representative Christian Ebeke.
Taiwo Oyedele, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, described Ebeke as a trusted partner. He said Ebeke’s professionalism, technical depth and constructive engagement strengthened cooperation during a critical period of economic transition.
Oyedele noted that Ebeke’s three-year tenure coincided with major reforms. These reforms aimed to restore macroeconomic stability, strengthen public finances, improve investor confidence and support long-term growth.
Furthermore, Oyedele stated that Ebeke remained closely engaged with Nigerian authorities. He provided technical support on fiscal reforms, domestic revenue mobilisation, public debt management and foreign exchange reforms.
Stanley George, Director of the International Economic Relations Department in the Ministry of Finance, said the partnership grew stronger through sustained dialogue and mutual respect. He added that Ebeke’s contributions would leave a lasting impact.
Meanwhile, Yemi Cardoso, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, said Ebeke’s tenure coincided with a defining period. During this time, the federal government and the central bank implemented bold policy measures to restore stability and improve market confidence.
In response, Christian Ebeke expressed profound admiration for the resilience, talent and entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerians. He stated that with sustained reforms, sound economic policies and continued collaboration, Nigeria stood well positioned to achieve inclusive and durable economic growth.
