Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend Minister of Works Senator David Umahi pending an independent investigation into the death of physiotherapist Mary Habila.
Mary Habila, aged 26, died at Senator David Umahi’s residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State. Authorities confirmed the incident, and it sparked widespread public concern and demands for transparency.
Atiku Abubakar issued the call on Thursday. He expressed deep sorrow over the reports surrounding Habila’s death. The former vice president urged President Bola Tinubu to direct Senator David Umahi to step aside immediately. This move, Atiku stated, would allow for an impartial inquiry free from interference.
He also pushed for an independent autopsy and full public accountability. Atiku emphasized that the government must address the matter transparently to maintain public trust.
The African Democratic Congress echoed similar demands. The party described the circumstances as raising serious questions. ADC National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi said Senator David Umahi should step aside pending the outcome of the investigation. He argued that the minister’s continued stay in office would undermine confidence in any probe.
The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria also called for suspension. The council gave a seven day ultimatum and warned of nationwide protests if demands for a credible investigation went unmet.
Senator David Umahi confirmed that Mary Habila died at his residence. He described her as a physiotherapist assigned to his home and supported calls for an autopsy. However, groups alleged possible cover up and demanded that security agencies establish the exact circumstances of her death.
The Nigerian Women International Alliance wrote an open letter to President Bola Tinubu. The group sought an independent, transparent probe that proceeds without interference and aligns with the law.
As investigations continue, various stakeholders pressed for clarity. Atiku Abubakar and other voices highlighted the need for accountability in the case. Officials have yet to announce formal actions on the suspension or probe details.
