The United States House of Representatives passed an amendment that withholds all United States aid to Nigeria. Lawmakers acted on concerns about the persecution of Christians in the country.
Florida Congressman Gregory Steube sponsored the amendment. He proposed it during debate on the fiscal year 2027 State Department spending bill. The House approved the measure by voice vote on Wednesday.
The change raised the withholding level from 50 percent to 100 percent. Aid remains frozen until the United States secretary of state certifies that Nigeria takes effective steps to protect citizens and address violence.
Supporters pointed to persistent attacks on Christian communities. They highlighted assaults by armed groups in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region. Steube stated that his amendment ensures the Nigerian government stops the slaughter of Christians before it receives further assistance.
The House later passed the broader appropriations bill by a vote of 217 to 209. The legislation now moves to the Senate. Observers noted that the amendment reflects growing frustration with Nigeria’s response to religious violence.
This decision adds to previous United States actions on religious freedom in Nigeria. Lawmakers tied the aid condition to demands for accountability and protection of religious minorities. The measure aims to encourage stronger Nigerian efforts against perpetrators.
