Atiku has to wait till 2031, it’s not North’s time now — Ali Modu Sheriff

Former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff dismissed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar chances in the 2027 presidential election. Sheriff made the statement during a recent interview. He argued that it was not the North turn to produce the next president.

Sheriff explained the position clearly. He said former President Muhammadu Buhari completed eight years in office. As a result, power should remain in the South for the next term. He added that Atiku Abubakar stood alone on this issue. Sheriff noted that the North would not support a northern candidate in 2027.

Sheriff recognised Atiku Abubakar credentials. He described him as a leader in Northern Nigeria who was eminently qualified. However, Sheriff insisted that Atiku Abubakar had to wait until 2031. He stated that 2031 represented the appropriate time for the North to seek the presidency again.

Sheriff expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would secure re election in 2027. He noted that the All Progressives Congress would not take anything for granted. Party members would work hard ahead of the polls, he added. Sheriff also dismissed other opposition candidates including Peter Obi.

This stance aligned with Nigeria unwritten power rotation principle. Many politicians respected this arrangement to promote national balance.

Sheriff comments came as political activities intensified towards the 2027 general elections. Observers monitored reactions from various stakeholders in the coming weeks.
