INEC Extends Nationwide Continuous Voter Registration by Two Weeks, Introduces Online Self-Service Portal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an extension of the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by an additional two weeks. The electoral body also unveiled a new online self-service registration platform to ease access for eligible first-time voters.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Friday and signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.

According to INEC, the decision followed a comprehensive review of the exercise and feedback received from state offices, political parties, civil society organisations, and other key stakeholders across the country. The Commission noted that the extension is aimed at ensuring that more eligible Nigerians are able to complete their voter registration without undue constraints.

The newly introduced online self-service option allows eligible first-time voters to begin and complete parts of the registration process digitally before final biometric capture and verification at designated centres. INEC stated that the innovation is part of ongoing efforts to improve efficiency, reduce congestion at registration centres, and enhance the overall voter registration experience.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to inclusiveness, transparency, and credibility in the electoral process, urging eligible citizens who are yet to register to take advantage of both the physical and online registration channels within the extended timeframe.
