TINUBU INAUGURATES LITHIUM PROCESSING PLANT IN NASARAWA, MARKING MAJOR BOOST FOR SOLID MINERALS SECTOR

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially inaugurated a lithium processing plant in Nasarawa State, described as West Africa’s largest facility dedicated to lithium beneficiation and processing. The project represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to expand value addition within the solid minerals sector and reduce reliance on raw mineral exports.

The newly commissioned plant is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global critical minerals supply chain, particularly as demand for lithium continues to rise due to its importance in battery production for electric vehicles, renewable energy storage systems, and electronic devices.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, President Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to industrialisation, job creation, and resource-based economic diversification. He noted that the development aligns with ongoing reforms aimed at attracting foreign and domestic investment into mining and processing industries, rather than the traditional export of unprocessed minerals.

Officials involved in the project highlighted its expected economic impact, including direct and indirect employment opportunities for residents of Nasarawa State and surrounding communities. The facility is also projected to stimulate infrastructure development, enhance technical skills transfer, and improve revenue generation for both state and federal governments.

The lithium plant is part of a broader national strategy to unlock Nigeria’s solid minerals potential and position the country as a competitive player in the global energy transition economy. Government stakeholders emphasized that improved regulatory frameworks and investor-friendly policies have been key drivers in facilitating projects of this scale.

Further details regarding production capacity, ownership structure, and operational timelines are expected to be released by relevant authorities in subsequent briefings.
